Sleeping nymph with satyr mid-eighteenth century
Bronze | 19.2 x 34.0 x 17.0 cm (whole object) | RCIN 35461
-
A bronze group of a nymph surprised by satyr. The nymph reclines over cushions and draperies on a chaise longue with her right arm extended over her body and her folded left arm resting over her head. The satyr crouches at her feet, resting his left arm on her right leg, advancing to surprise her. This group is a copy of Giovanni Bologna's bronze of the 'Sleeping Nymph with satyr' (now in the Grünes Gewölbe Museum in Dresden), recorded in the 1587 inventory of the Dresden Kunstkammer and thought to have been presented to Christian III, Elector of Saxony, by Francisco I of Medici as a diplomatic gift. Bologna's figure of the reclining nymph was based on the famous Hellenistic marble of Ariadne (also identified as Cleopatra) in the Vatican.
Provenance
Received at Carlton House from Kensington Palace on 30th December 1818. Sent from Carlton House to King's Lodge at Windsor Castle on 14th July 1824 (Justs Del III p 59).
