-
A bronze figure of David bending to the right and about to discharge his sling, standing beside discarded armour including a sword, shield and breastplate. On an irregular oval base and mounted on ebonised wood plinth. This is a copy of the famous life-size marble statue of David preparing to unleash the sling-shot that would fell Goliath, carved by Bernini in 1623-4 for Cardinal Scipione Borghese. Bernini’s emphasis on tension and latent power distinguishes this from earlier depictions of the Biblical hero, notably Michelangelo’s colossal statue.
