-
A bronze equestrian figure of Henry IV in full armour, holding a baton in his right hand, his horse with left foreleg raised, on tall rectangular green marble plinth, with foliate and moulded bronze borders.
The statuette is an eighteenth century replica of the equestrian monument of Henry IV made Pietro Tacca and Pierre Franqueville after original designs by Giovanni Bologna, erected on the Pont Neuf in Paris in 1614, and destroyed during the French Revolution.
Louis XV's mistress, Madame Dubarry, owned another rather different example with the horse on which the King is mounted trampling an enemy soldier below the horse's front legs (similar to one in the V&A A.46-1951). Madame Dubarry had formed a collection of Bourbon iconography. That example was purchased by her from the dealer Dominque Daguerre on 17th March 1791, described as 'un Henri IV equestre en bronze couleur antique avec pied en ebene' (1080 livres).Provenance
In George IV's bedroom at Carlton House. Sent to Windsor Castle on 28th November 1828.
