A bronze figure of a recumbent river god, reclining on the back of a sphinx from behind which water issues, with his right leg partially draped and holding a cornucopia in his left arm. Set on a rectangular base chased with plants, rocks and water. This allegorical figure of the river god The Nile is a small-scale bronze version of an original antique marble group, discovered during excavations in 1513 in Rome and housed in the Vatican. Usually paired, although not in this case, with an allegory of the river god 'The Tiber', it was reproduced in different media during the eighteenth century.
Provenance
Bought on 16 August 1824 from Rundell, Bridge & Rundell for £42. Sent from Royal Lodge in Windsor to Carlton House on 31st March 1825. Sent to Windsor Castle on 28th November 1828.
