Jupiter hurling thunderbolts 1650
Bronze | 55.0 x 28.0 x 26.0 cm (whole object) | RCIN 35447
-
A full length bronze figure of Jupiter depicted standing and nude except for a flying cloak fastened on his left shoulder and right hip, and with an eagle with outspread wings standing between his legs. His right arm raised about to hurl a thunderbolt, his left arm extended to the front. Set on a square base mounted on a wooden plinth. This impressive bronze may once have formed a pair with a companion figure of Jupiter’s wife Juno. It was designed to be seen from a low viewpoint, perhaps reflecting a forgotten monumental marble. The pose was probably copied from a well-known bronze statuette by Giambologna representing Hercules with a club.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George IV
