-
A bronze statuette of the goddess Venus kneeling on her right knee, with her head turned to the right and hair gathered loosely at the back and partially falling over her left shoulder. Set on a rectangular bronze plinth.
This statuette is a small-scale bronze version of a Hellenistic marble statue of Aphrodite, known as the 'Crouching Venus', from 200 BC. The ancient marble would have been known to contemporary artists through prints and drawings, or Roman copies and adaptations of the Hellenistic original which had been rediscovered during the Renaissance and existed in famous collections such as the Borghese in Rome.Provenance
Purchased by Benois in Paris for the Prince Regent. Received from Paris on 26 January 1819. In 1824 it was sent to the King's Lodge at Windsor. Recorded in the Corridor at Windsor Castle in 1915.
