A reduced bronze copy of the Antique marble group which was discovered in 1583 and was copied and reproduced in smaller versions by artists since the Renaissance. It represents two nude wrestlers during a fight, the lower held by the upper in an arm lock. The bronze has an orange brown patina and is set on a rectangular naturalistic base chased with plants, grasses and rocks.
Provenance
Purchased by Lord Yarmouth for the Prince Regent in Paris. Received in London on 9th January 1818 'a Group in Bronze of Two Wrestlers Fighting. Mounted on ormolu stand' and sent to Carlton House. Moved to Windsor Castle on 28th November 1828. Recorded in the Corridor at Windsor Castle in 1915.
