This white marble bust by the British sculptor Sir Francis Chantrey (1781-1841), is a portrait of Sir Robert Peel, statesman and twice Prime Minister first under William IV, and Queen Victoria later on. He is shown with his head turning to the left, with fashionable curly hair brushed back and with a cloak loosely draped and fixed at his breast.
The bust was commissioned by William IV who, like his brother George IV had done before him, acquired numerous portraits of influential British politicians of the period to decorate the interiors at Windsor Castle.
Another copy of the bust by Robert Glassby (1872-1908) exists in the Royal Collection, RCIN 2059.Provenance
