Between 1805 and 1815 George IV commissioned the English sculptor Joseph Nollekens to carry out a series of busts of influential politicians and friends. This white marble bust of the Whig politician and orator, Charles James Fox, was completed in 1808 and it is a version of an earlier one, slightly longer, that Nollekens had made for Woburn Abbey in 1801. The bust became popular within the group of Fox's close friends and collaborators and eleven copies of the bust, made by Nollekens, are known to exist today. Fox is depicted with his head slightly turned to the right, dressed in the classical manner with a loose cloak falling over his shoulder and gathered on his right, and with short brushed hair which was fashionable during the period. It was been suggested that the Baroque manner in which Nollekens has depicted Fox reflects to perfection the flamboyant character and dominating personality of this much admired, unconventional politician. Originally placed in the Octagon Hall at Carlton House, the bust was sent to Windsor Castle on 12th November 1828.
Provenance
Commissioned by George IV, when the Prince of Wales; bill dated 22 of March 1808 for £126. Originally in the Octogan Hall at Carlton House
