Between 1805 and 1815 Nollekens produced for George IV - as Prince of Wales and Prince Regent from 1811 - a series of busts of British politicians and friends. Francis Russell, 5th Duke of Bedford (1765-1802), was an English politician also known for his role in the development of the Bloomsbury area of London. He is depicted looking slightly to the left, with classical drapery loosely falling over his shoulders and with the short curly hair and sideburns that were fashionable during this period. Nollekens charged £126 for the bust. It was delivered to Carlton House on 7th November 1809. It was sent to Windsor Castle on 12th Novemeber 1828, after Carlton House was demolished.
