To add to the grand interiors of Carlton House, George IV - as Prince of Wales and Prince Regent - commissioned the celebrated English sculptor, Joseph Nollekens to make a series of marble portrait busts of prominent English politicians and friends. This bust depicts Lord Erskine, a jurist, reformer and Chancellor to the Prince of Wales from 1802 to 1806. He is depicted with his head slightly raised and turning left, with a classical toga falling over his shoulders and with contemporary short curly hair. The bust was received at Carlton House in 1816; in 1828, the year Carlton House was demolished, it was sent to Windsor Castle on 12th November.
