This marble bust depicts Francis 2nd, Earl of Moira (1754-1836), politician and close friend of George IV, who in 1788 had supported the bid for the Regency of the Prince of Wales. Although the bid did not succeed, the Earl's initiative and demonstration of support won him the favour of the Prince of Wales. The Duke is depicted with his head turned slightly to the right, with furrowed and back swept hair, and with a loose cloak draped over his shoulders. It is part of a group of marble portrait busts of close friends and British politicians that George IV - as Prince of Wales and Prince Regent - commissioned Nollekens to make between 1804 and 1815.
