A bronze bust of Wilhelm V, 'the Pious' (1548-1626), Duke of Bavaria, wearing a fantastic armour, elaborately cast with grotesque masks, foliage and mythical birds, and with winged female figures on the pauldrons. The heavily-cast bust is supported on a makeshift and ineffective socle with a cartouche at the front inscribed in paint: 'SULLY'. Although the identity of the subject was mistaken for at least two hundred years, there now seems little doubt - on grounds of likeness, style and facture - that this a cast from part of the model for the full-length kneeling figure of Wilhelm V intended for his tomb in the Michaelskirche, Munich. This elaborate monument, which was never completed, was the work of the court sculptors Carlo di Cesare del Palagio and Hubert Gerhard. Wilhelm and his wife, Renata of Lorraine, were to have been depicted side-by-side in an attitude of prayer. Other parts of the monument were used second-hand in various places, including the Residenz and the tomb of Ludwig of Bavaria in the Frauenkirche. Literature: J. Marsden and D.
