Thinly made dish, with a flat, round centre and chrysanthemumpetalled sides curving up to a foliate rim, the low foot similarly lobed and the flat base black. Incised in the centre and filled with gold, an inscription:
吳下髹工巧莫比
仿為或以舊還過
脫胎那用木和錫
成器奚勞琢與磨
博士品同謝青喻
仙人顔侶暈朱酡
事宜師古寍斯謂
擬欲摛吟愧即多
乾隆甲午御題Wuxia xiugong qiao mo bi

Cheng qi xi lao zhuo yu mo
Boshi pin tong Xie Qing yu

詠倣永樂朱漆菊花盤

Provenance
Acquired by George III. Presented by the Qianlong emperor following Lord Macartney’s Embassy of 1792–4. ‘Four red japan fluted saucers, (all broke)’ were sent from the Royal Pavilion, Brighton, to Buckingham Palace in June 1848 (1829A, p. 53), of which this is perhaps one.
