Flagon c.1661
Silver gilt | 42 x 30 cm (whole object) | RCIN 31750
-
Silver-gilt flagon of tapering form with spreading foot and a scrolling handle with a double pomegranate thumbpiece; body chased with flowers centred by a Tudor rose with a crown above, its stalk bearing two leaves; foot chased with a continuous band of flowers.
This flagon is very similar in weight and appearance to RCIN 31749, and they were clearly meant to form a pair. They are grouped together in both the 1688 and 1721 inventories. The minor differences in decoration reflect the freedom given to individual chasers in their work.
The rose with a stalk bearing two leaves (or in heraldic terms: a rose slipped in the stalk) was symbolic of the restored Stuart monarchy and only appears on items of plate supplied in the first year of Charles II’s reign.
Henry Greenway entered his mark in 1648 and by 1652 had Robert Smythier as an apprentice. Both worked for Robert Vyner. Greenway, with Smythier and Francis Leake, made the silver which formed the Earl of Carlisle's embassy gifts to Moscow in 1664.Provenance
