Cruet 1682
Silver gilt | 12.0 cm (whole object) | RCIN 31737
-
Cruet with a plain, pear-shaped body on a moulded circular foot with a slight 'pinched' lip at front and a single scroll handle; low cap cover surmounted by V and A (for Vinum and Aqua, wine and water), fluted scroll thumbpiece. Engraved on the front with the arms of William III and Mary II.
This cruet is very similar to another in the collection (RCIN 31738), made by George Garthorne. The original function of these pieces was at one time thought to be liturgical. They were believed to originally have been Mass Cruets for the wine used in the private chapel of James, Duke of York, and then subsequently converted for domestic use. However the evidence of the 1688 inventory would appear to establish conclusively their domestic purpose. One entry under the heading, 'Pastry', reads, '4 Crewets gilt poiz 50.01.00', and under the heading, 'Gilt Plate in the Office', there are three more weighing 36 oz.Provenance
Supplied to Charles II; sold (in 1808?). Purchased for the Royal Collection in 1975
