A Carrara marble herm-bust of Barthold Georg Niebuhr, depicted as a middle age man, looking straight at the viewer, with hair parted in the middle and side whiskers. Wolff completed the plaster model for his posthumous marble bust of the ancient Rome historian Barthold Georg Niebuhr six years after his death in 1837. He made several versions in marble, including this one at the Royal Collection. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert displayed Wolff's bust together with Carl Johann Steinhäuser's bust of the German poet Friedrich Ruckert (RCIN 69005) - acquired by Prince Albert in 1856 - in in the Corridor outside the Prince Albert's Library and Music Room at Buckingham Palace. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were keen collectors of contemporary neo-classical artists and Wolff was of their favourite artists from whom they commissioned several works including bust and full-length portraits, and decorative sculpture.
Provenance
Acquired by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, probably in the 1840s.
