Purchased by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1955, this Carrara white marble bust of George III by the sculptor Peter Turnerelli was executed in 1813. It depicts George III a l'antica style, like a laureate emperor of antiquity, wearing a laurel wreath on his head and with a cloak arranged over his shoulders, with the Star of the Garter carved on his left chest. There are two more likenesses of George III by Turnerelli in the Royal Collection. One is Turnerelli's famous marble Jubilee bust of George III (RCIN 11910) for which he received some eighty private and public commissions for reproductions. The other is the plaster model (RCIN 100297), exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1811, for the full-length marble statue of George III standing beside a column supporting the crown completed in 1815 and now at King's College London.
