A relief depicting seven boys singing, dressed with classical tunics. Set in a wooden frame. This relief is part of a set of six bronze reductions made after the marble reliefs executed by Lucca Della Robbia in 1438 for the Duomo in Florence. The reliefs decorated the upper row of the Cantoria, or singing gallery, located above the door to the Sacristy of the Masses (now in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo). They illustrated verses from Laudate Dominum Psalm 150 and depicted from left to right: Seven boys singing, Ten boys trumpeting, Eight girls singing and playing stringed instruments, Seven girls singing, Nine boys playing on flutes and drums, and Five boys singing from a scroll. The reliefs became a subject of interest and study during the nineteenth century and several casts of the originals are known to have been made during the 1870s.
Provenance
Possibly acquired by Queen Victoria. At Osborne House in the latter part of the nineteenth century.
