A rectangular brass carriage clock with a hinged, faceted D-shaped handle; the white enamel face painted with two dials in black; on an incurving plinth base. The glazed top is painted in gold with a crowned N cipher. The eight day rack ting-tang striking mechanism has a going barrel movement and European lever platform escapement. The enamel face has two dials; the main dial has the 12 hours represented by Roman numerals and blued steel moonhands. The subsidiary alarm dial below has a blued steel pint.
Provenance
This clock belonged to Emperor Napoleon III and he is believed to have used it for many years. It was presented to Queen Victoria by Empress Eugenie and The Prince Imperial after Napoleon's death in February 1873.
