This is one of a group of photographs taken for release at the time of the South African tour of 1947, when the Princesses accompanied their parents. It was the first time that either of the Princesses had been abroad. While they were away, Princess Elizabeth celebrated her twenty-first birthday. The occasion was marked by her radio broadcast ‘to all the peoples of the British Commonwealth and Empire’, in which she dedicated herself to their service.
