Photograph of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (1900-2002), when Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon. Three-quarters length portrait, leaning on table, looking down at flowers in vase and book. A year before her own wedding, Lady Elizabeth acted as a bridesmaid to King George V’s only daughter, Princess Mary. A profound change in women’s fashion was brought about by the First World War (1914-18) and her loosely fitted dress is typical of the early 1920s fashion. The style was repeated for Lady Elizabeth’s own wedding dress in 1923.
