Balmoral Tableaux Vivants: 'Antigone' 6 - 6 Oct 1888
-
Photograph of Princess Frederica of Hanover (1848-1926) standing in full length in the character of Antigone during a Tableaux performance at Balmoral. She wears a toga and head band and holds out her right hand which she extends in the direction of the ground. On the ground on her right is a jug. A spear rests in a tree in the background.
The photograph probably shows Princess Frederica of Hanover or 'Lilly' dressed in character during a tableaux performed at Balmoral Castle. The scene shows Antigone who performs a Libation outside the city walls of Thebes when, in defiance of the orders of the King of Thebes, she buried her dead brother, Polyneices. Antigone is part of the three Theban Plays written by Sophocles and concerns the central character's wish to bury her dead brother Polyneices who died fighting in the Thebes Civil war against his brother Eteocles. Polyneices is denied a proper burial by the new King, Creon, the new ruler of Thebes.
A tableau vivant performance involved actors who held a static pose, sometimes to the accompaniment of music, for a number of minutes. The tableau would recreate famous artworks using 'living' actors, historical events, and in this case, scenes from plays. Scene changes would be marked by the raising and lowering of a curtain, allowing actors to form another different pose. -
