Photograph of a tableau performed at Balmoral Castle titled 'Antigone'. The performers are (left to right): Princess Frederica of Hanover (1848-1926), or 'Lily' as she was affectionately known, who stands with her right hand raised to her chest and Miss M Hope Robson who plays Antigone's sister, Ismene, with her right hand raised. Both performers are dressed in robes and stand against a plain backdrop comprising a single palm tree, against which a spear is propped, and boulders.
On Saturday 6 October 1888, Queen Victoria saw Antigone performed in the Ballroom at Balmoral Castle. Antigone is part of the three Theban Plays written by Sophocles and concerns the central character's wish to bury her dead brother Polyneices who died fighting in the Thebes Civil war against his brother Eteocles. Polyneices is denied a proper burial by the new King, Creon, the new ruler of Thebes. This tableau was performed to Queen Victoria at Balmoral Castle on the 6th October 1888 along with Malcolm Canmore, although the Queen writes in her journal for that day that she 'cared less' for the performance of Antigone. -
