Photograph of a tableau performed at Balmoral Castle as part of Queen Victoria's 75th birthday celebrations. Hubert is seated, wearing furs whilst embracing the young Prince Arthur, who wears a gold brocade tunic and a small dagger.
The tableau recreates the scene in Shakespeare's King John when Hubert, the brother of the King, played by Prince Henry of Battenberg, is sent to kill Prince Arthur, played by his son in real life, Prince Alexander. Hubert realises that he cannot do as he is bid by the King when the young Prince Arthur expresses his love for Hubert. These roles were made all the more poignant by the father and son relationship of the actors.
