Photograph of a scene from the play 'Used Up' performed at Balmoral Castle. The players from left to right are: Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Collins as Sir C Coldstream, moustachioed seated in wicker chair. Standing in the middle of the group is Major Bigge as Ironbrace the blacksmith who wears a leather apron. On the right is seated Princess Beatrice as Lady Clutterbuck who is holding gloves and an umbrella.
The play 'Used Up', originally by the Irish playwright Dion Boucicault, was adapted and performed on two occasions in the Ballroom at Balmoral Castle; the first on the 30th September and the second on the 5 October as part of the 31st birthday celebrations for Prince Henry of Battenberg, when this photograph was taken of the cast. Despite the Queen commenting in her diary that the 'music was perfectly disgraceful', she found the second act of the play was 'very amusing and exciting.' RA VIC/MAIN/QVJ (W) 5 October 1889 -
