Photograph of a scene from the play 'Used Up' that was performed at Balmoral Castle. On the left, Rosa Hood dressed as maid 'Susan', in a black dress with a white apron and bonnet stands with a bottle of champagne in her hand. She faces the blacksmith 'Ironbrace' played by Major Bigge who is wearing a long leather blacksmith's apron and carrying a basket of tools.
The play 'Used Up', originally by the Irish playwright Dion Boucicault, was adapted and performed on two occasions in the Ballroom at Balmoral Castle; the first on the 30th September and the second on the 5 October as part of the 31st birthday celebrations for Prince Henry of Battenberg, when this photograph was taken of the cast. Despite the Queen commenting in her diary that the 'music was perfectly disgraceful', she found the second act of the play was 'very amusing and exciting.' RA VIC/MAIN/QVJ (W) 5 October 1889 -
