Photograph of Prince Arthur (1883-1938), later Prince Arthur of Connaught representing the Duke of York, seated on a bed, his hands together in prayer and looking upwards. Beside him and kneeling on the floor, is Edward V played by Princess Margaret (1882-1920), later Crown Princess of Sweden who also has her hands clasped together in prayer. A candle stands on a small table on the left where a drape hangs down. A large crucifix hangs in the centre of the wall, above the bed with rugs on the floor.
The Princes in the Tower was a popular subject for artists to portray and this tableau would have been part of that trend during the 19th century. The artists John Everett Millais (1829-96) and Paul Delaroche (1797-1856) both painted the Princes in the Tower, thus conveying the popular theme of Victorian Sentimentality. Queen Victoria recorded in her journal for the 5th October 1888 that the 'tableaux were most successful, & really beautiful...We had a small band, from Aberdeen which played well, & appropriate pieces, during, & between the Tableaux.' RA VIC/MAIN/QVJ (W) 5th October 1888Provenance
