Photograph of a scene from Malcolm Canmore performed as a tableaux at Balmoral Castle. From left to right are: Mr Douglas Campbell (1840-1919) as an attendant; Prince Henry of Battenberg (1858-96) as Malcolm Canmore and Princess Beatrice (1857-1944) as Queen Margaret. All are dressed in Scottish Highland Costume and are set against a painted background featuring mountains and a loch.
Malcolm Canmore is a representation of Malcolm III (1031-93), King of Scotland. Canmore derives from the Gaelic meaning one who is 'Great' or a 'Chieftain'. Queen Victoria wrote in her diary for the 6th October when the tableaux was performed: 'Dinner the same as yesterday & then went to the Ballroom [in Balmoral], for the performance of the last 7 tableaux: M Malcolm Canmore, Queen Margaret, Beatrice-Malcolm Canmore, Liko [Prince Henry of Battenberg]-Attendant, Mr Walter Campbell (younger brother of Sir A.
