Photograph of the tableau 'Harvest' that was performed at Balmoral Castle. The performers are (from left to right): Princess Maud of Wales (1869-1938); Princess Alix of Hesse (1872-1918), later Empress of Russia; Prince Arthur of Connaught (1883-1938); Prince Albert Victor of Wales (1864-92); Baron Pavel von Rammingen (1843-1932); Princess Margaret of Connaught (1882-1920); Miss Trotter and Sir Robert Collins (1843-1903).
Princess Beatrice's husband, Prince Henry of Battenberg, revived the taste for performances of tableaux vivants at Royal residences including Balmoral Castle where this photograph was taken. These 'living pictures' were performed by members of the royal family and royal household and consisted of two poses usually shown twice. Music was often performed during the performance and Queen Victoria was often instrumental in editing scripts and advising on costumes. Queen Victoria wrote in her journal following the performance of this tableau that "We had a small band from Aberdeen, which played well, & appropriate pieces, during, & between the tableaux."
