This photograph is part a series mounted into an album also containing drawings and watercolours, all of which document the five-week Coronation Tour of the Indian subcontinent from December 1911 to January 1912. The King and Queen sailed from Portsmouth on RMS Medina. The Delhi Durbar, a ceremonial gathering which marked George V’s succession as King Emperor of India, was held on 12 December. It seems likely, due to its placement in the album, that this photograph was taken on the outward journey.
