Photograph of a procession in Delhi; three men, including King George V on horses have just ridden through an archway with a stone elephant on the left. Soldiers standing to attention form a line either side, and in the distance (through the archway) other men on horseback are visible. Annotated in pencil below the photograph on the album page: State entry into Delhi 7 Dec 1911.
This photograph is part a series mounted into an album also containing drawings and watercolours, all of which document the five-week Coronation Tour of the Indian subcontinent from December 1911 to January 1912. The King and Queen sailed from Portsmouth on RMS Medina. The Delhi Durbar, a ceremonial gathering which marked George V’s succession as King Emperor of India, was held on 12 December. It seems likely, due to its placement in the album, that this photograph was taken on the outward journey.Provenance
