King George V, Queen Mary and their suite watching entertainments on board RMS Medina c.1911
Matte collodion print | 15.3 x 20.9 cm (whole object) | RCIN 2966242

Photograph of a group of people including King George V and Queen Mary leaning against a ship's railing watching some activity (not pictured) on a lower deck. Annotated in pencil below the photograph on the album page: On the Medina.
This photograph is part a series mounted into an album also containing drawings and watercolours, all of which document the five-week Coronation Tour of the Indian subcontinent from December 1911 to January 1912. The King and Queen sailed from Portsmouth on RMS Medina. The Delhi Durbar, a ceremonial gathering which marked George V’s succession as King Emperor of India, was held on 12 December. It seems likely that the spectacle the King and Queen are pictured enjoying in this photograph is that depicted in RCIN 2966243, the next photograph mounted in this album. A very similar photograph was reproduced as an illustration in John Fortescue, Narrative of the Visit to India of their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary, and of the Coronation Durbar held at Delhi 12th December 1911 (1912), facing p. 104, captioned 'Watching a spar-and-pillow fight'.Provenance
Mounted in an album presumably compiled by Queen Mary
