Photograph of a drawing by William Simpson depicting the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, at a reception in Calcutta. The Prince is being greeted by a Maharaja and is surrounded by the South Asian Princes and officials of the Bengal region. The title and date are inscribed in the lower left corner of the drawing. The original drawing is in the Royal Collection : RCIN 921110.
The original drawing was part of a series produced by William Simpson, Special Artist to the Illustrated London News, during the 1875-6 tour of India made by the Prince of Wales. The drawings were subsequently exhibited at the Burlington Gallery, Piccadilly and a selection purchased by the Prince and Princess of Wales. Twelve of the drawings purchased by the Prince were chosen to be reproduced as photographs and included in a souvenir book. -
