  • Photograph of a small waterfall on the River Coe within the Glen. The water falls off rocks on the left side with a single track leading away from the falls towards the mountain Aonach Dubh, otherwise known as 'The Black Rock', in the background.

    On Friday August 20th 1847, the Queen recorded in her journal that '[Prince] Albert and Charles [Prince of Leiningen] set off in the "Fairy" to see Glencoe. They returned at twenty minutes past seven, and Albert thought Glencoe was very fine, though not quite as much as he had expected.' RA VIC/MAIN/ QVJ (W) 20th August 1847. This photograph is from a portfolio of 42 photographs taken by Wilson that were used to illustrate a book featuring entries from Queen Victoria's journals, written during her visits to Scotland. Leaves from the Journal of Our Life in the Highlands was published to great success in 1868. This photograph is also known as Waterfall in Glencoe.
