  • Photograph of a waterfall tumbling over a small, rocky precipice. The waterfall is located in the Ballochbuie Forest on the Balmoral estate in Scotland, 3km from Braemar. In the foreground, large boulders border the water with the branches of a tree on the right, both of which frame the composition.

This photograph is deliberately framed to include large boulders in the foreground. By adding foreground interest, a sense of depth is created which serves to enhance the 3 dimensional effect when viewed through a stereoscope. Printed from one half of a stereoscopic negative, this photograph was reviewed in the British Journal of Photography on the 15th January 1860 and was probably taken in the autumn of 1859. This photograph is from a portfolio of 42 photographs taken by Wilson that were used to illustrate a book featuring entries from Queen Victoria's journals, written during her visits to Scotland. Leaves from the Journal of Our Life in the Highlands, was published to great success in 1868.
