Photograph of Taymouth Castle taken from a high vantage point. The castle appears beyond the battlements of the fort with two cannon visible in the foreground in front of which stand high trees. The castle, visible in the background, comprises a main square shaped building with crenelated towers at each corner and three storeys in height. A smaller square building stands to the left and a two storeyed wing is on the right.
Taymouth Castle which is situated near the village of Kenmore in Perth and Kinross in Scotland, was built by John Campbell, the First Marquess of Breadalbane during the early 19th century and is regarded as one of the most architecturally important castles in Scotland. It features Neo Gothic designs executed by some of the finest craftsmen of the 19th century including the English ornamental carver, Francis Bernasconi (1762-1841).
This photograph is from a portfolio of 42 photographs taken by Wilson that were used to illustrate a book featuring entries from Queen Victoria's journals, written during her visits to Scotland. Leaves from the Journal of Our Life in the Highlands, was published to great success in 1868.Provenance
