State Prisoners held during the Siege of Lucknow 1858
-
Watercolour sketch by Major MacBean of the state prisoners held in the hospital during the Siege of Lucknow. Sahib-i Alam, Mirza Muhammad Mustafa Ali Haidar, Bahram Shaukat Bahadur (the eldest son of Amjad Ali Shah) is sitting on a bed at the back of the room to the left. Syed Khadim Hussein (an official of Nawab Ghazi al-din Haidar Shah), is sitting on a blue and white stripped rug on the floor wrapped in a white cloth. Mirza Muhammad Humayun Shah (a Mughal prince) is standing at the centre of the group with his hands together. Mirza Muhammad Hyder Shikoh (another Mughal prince), is sitting at the back of the room wearing red. Drig Narayan Singh, the Rajah of Tulsipur, is lying on a bed to the far right covered with a red blanket. The men are identified by numbers written below.
The accompanying text for this image, at the front of the book, records that these men were held as prisoners in the hospital during the Siege of Lucknow. They had been taken captive prior to the siege by Sir Henry Lawrence, the Chief Commissioner of the province of Awadh and a key figure in the defence. This is one of only two watercolours in the book, the rest of the images being photographs of the original sketches. -
