Photograph of a sketch by Major MacBean of a battery known as the "The Ship" or "The Mortar Howitzer" during the Siege of Lucknow. The outer rim of the battery is reinforced with a wooden fence and sandbags. Two soldiers are loading a gun with a short barrel. There is a handwritten caption in the lower right corner.
The accompanying text for this image, at the front of the book, notes that the eight-inch mortar shown in the sketch was used as a substitute for a short barrelled howitzer gun. This was the idea of Lieutenant Bonham of the Bengal Artillery, who is shown loading the gun. -
