Photograph of a sketch by Major MacBean of Brigadier John Eardley Inglis (1814-1862) and his staff. Brigadier Inglis is standing at the centre of the group holding a sword. Standing to the left are Captain Wilson of the 13th Regiment and Captain Birch of the 71st Regiment. To the right are Captain Hardinge of the 45th Regiment and Captain James of the 2nd Grenadiers, who is on crutches. The men are identified with handwritten numbers below.
Following the death of Sir Henry Lawerence early in the Siege of Lucknow, Brigadier John Eardley Inglis took command of the Residency and maintained the defence of the garrison for 87 days. -
