Salted paper print | 13.4 x 19.2 cm (image) | RCIN 2946397

-
Photograph of a sketch by Major MacBean of the British Residency in Lucknow. The three storey building is covered with bullet holes and has a tower to the right. There are two tents in the foreground, with a group of men gathered around the tent to the right. There is a handwritten caption in the lower left corner.
The Residency was the focus of the prolonged defence of the city of Lucknow during the Indian Uprising of 1857. Sir Henry Lawrence, the Chief Commissioner of the province of Awadh and a key figure in the defence, was killed by shell fire in the Residency during the early stages of the siege. -
