The House belonging to Martin Gubbins, Lucknow 1858
-
Photograph of a sketch by Major MacBean of the house in Lucknow belonging to Martin Gubbins, Financial Commissioner of Oudh [Awadh]. The building has a small dome and is punctured with bullet holes. There is a low wall and a large tree in front of the house.
The accompanying text for this image, at the front of the book, records that this house was held during the Seige of Lucknow by soldiers of the 32nd Regiment led by Major Apthorp of the '41st Regiment Native Infantry.' Nine ladies were also in the house during the siege, one of whom, Mrs Dorin, was shot dead in the centre room. The large tree was cut to pieces by the gunfire. -
