Photograph of Princess Elizabeth aged one year old. Half length portrait, seated, turned to left but looking to front, hands raised. Dress embroidered with rabbits and flowers, necklace. This portrait of the one-year-old Princess Elizabeth was taken in May 1927. The Princess's parents, the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth) were on their six-month tour of Australia and New Zealand at the time. During their absence, Princess Elizabeth was cared for by her grandparents and her nurse, Clara Knight, known as 'Allah'. She stayed first with her maternal grandparents, the Strathmores, at St Paul’s Walden Bury in Hertfordshire, then in February she went to London to stay with King George V and Queen Mary.
