Charles Reid (1837-1929)
Landscape with sheep c.1895

Photograph of sheep grazing on rough ground with mountains beyond. Boggy stream in foreground.
Charles Reid was known for his photographic studies of animals. This idealised country scene is reminiscent of some of the work of the Linked Ring Brotherhood which was being produced at about the same time. The aim of this group was to use photography as art, some members preferring to produce work which was true to nature as it was, and others attempting representations which were true to idealised conceptions of nature as it might be. Reid was not a member of the group, but this photograph shows that he was inspired by the spirit of the time.Provenance
