Photograph of a full length double portrait of Victoria, the Princess Royal, later Empress of Germany (1841-1901), and Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78), seated side by side on a bench outside. The Princess Royal looks to her right and Princess Alice looks downwards. The Princess Royal rests her hands on top of a cane. Both sisters wear hats, jackets and full skirts. The photograph was likely taken on the Balmoral estate, in front of the gardener's cottage.
