Photograph showing full length portrait of King George VI (1895-1952) when Duke of York and Queen Elizabeth (1900-2002) when Duchess of York, standing side by side in their wedding clothes. The Duke of York and Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon were married in Westminster Abbey on 26 April 1923. In his diary King George V noted that after continuous rain that morning ‘the sun actually came out as Elizabeth entered the Abbey’. In this photograph, taken at Buckingham Palace after the wedding, the new Duchess of York does not hold her bouquet. In an unrehearsed gesture, she had placed it on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier on the way into the Abbey.
