Alfred West (1857-1937) of the photographic company G.West & Son in Gosport and Southsea, was a well-known marine photographer and pioneer cinematographer. He sailed with HMS Crescent in 1898 and HMS Ophir in 1901, making a number of films, one of which was shown to Queen Victoria at Osborne.
