Portrait of Horatio Ross (1801-86) with his son Edward Ross (1841-96), the winner of the Queen's prize at the National Rifle Association meeting, July 1860. The photograph is mounted on card with the photographer's credit lithographed on the mount and numbered in pencil, 'No.23'. Horatio Ross was born in Rossie, in Forfarshire, Scotland, and was named after Horatio Nelson, his godfather. During the 1820s he was active as a sportsman, before turning to politics in the 1830s. He served as a Member of Parliament between 1831 and 1834. Ross continued to be involved in the Volunteer movement throughout his life and was an active rifleman, encouraging all his sons in the sport. Edward Ross is photographed with his father Horatio Ross, one of the most accomplished marksmen of the nineteenth century. Horatio had previously met Fenton in early 1860 when together they undertook training in the Volunteers. Horatio was also a pioneering photographer. He exhibited his work widely, particularly scenes of deer-stalking and hunting
