Portrait of Edward Charles Russell Ross (1841-96), the son of Horatio Ross. The photograph was taken at 2 Albert Terrace, Fenton's family home since December 1847. Photograph is mounted with the photographer's credit lithographed on the mount and numbered in pencil, 'No.21'.
Edward Ross was the winner of the Gold Medal for the Queen’s Prize at the first meeting of the National Rifle Association. The prize, worth £250, was open only to Volunteers. Ross was a member of the 7th North Yorkshire Volunteers. In 1865, Ross won the Silver Medal for the Queen’s Prize.

Ross had taken up shooting at the age of give, encouraged by his father Horatio, the latter being regarded as one of the most accomplished marksmen of the Victorian age.Provenance
