Photograph of a painting of Alexander II, Emperor of Russia (1818-81) and the Prince of Wales (1841-1910), later King Edward VII, in a sleigh. Alexander II is sitting to the right and they are both wearing fur coats. A man, also dressed in fur, is sitting at the front of the sleigh holding the reins of the three galloping horses in front. The ground is covered with snow and there is a man standing to the right raising his right hand to his hat. Annotated on the album page under the photograph: Prince of Wales and Tsar Alexander II in a troika.
This photograph is from an album compiled by Captain Oliver Montagu which contains photographs, newspaper cuttings, ephemera and a diary account by Montagu of the visit to Russia by the Prince and Princess of Wales, later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, in 1874. Albert Edward and Alexandra travelled to Russia to attend the wedding of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (and later Duke of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha) to Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna, the daughter of Tsar Alexander II. Captain Montagu was a member of the Prince and Princess of Wales's suite.Provenance
