Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich was the third son of Nicholas I, Emperor of Russia. This photograph is from an album compiled by Captain Oliver Montagu which contains photographs, newspaper cuttings, ephemera and a diary account by Montagu of the visit to Russia by the Prince and Princess of Wales, later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, in 1874. Albert Edward and Alexandra travelled to Russia to attend the wedding of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (and later Duke of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha) to Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna, the daughter of Tsar Alexander II. Captain Montagu was a member of the Prince and Princess of Wales's suite.
